All the theoretical derivations of impermeable geosynthetic tube were made based on the assumptions that the tensile forces along the whole cross-section were constant. However, this assumption is only valid when the friction between geosynthetic sheets and foundation are neglected. Theoretical studies to consider the frictions between tubes and ground should be carried out. Experimental studies on the influence of the interface friction on the design of geosynthetic tube or mat should also be carried out. One way is to compare the behavior of two identical tubes, but one with rough interface with the base and another with relatively smooth base.
Geosynthetic tube
The difference between the results obtained from the proposed method and the solutions of Leshchinsky’s (1996) and Kazimirowicz’s (1994) is less than 5%. The cross-sections obtained from the proposed method agree well with those from model test results. The comparisons between the analytical and model test results indicate that the tensile forces measured at the bottom corner from the model tests are slightly higher than those from analytical solutions due to the influence from bending of strain gauges. The tensile forces along the contact surface with ground obtained from model tests are smaller than those from analytical solutions because of the influence of frictions between geosynthetic sheets and concrete floor.When the height and width are normalized perimeter of cross-section, the normalized height or width versus the normalized pumping pressure curve becomes unique. The normalized height decreases at a faster rate when the normalized pumping pressure is less than 0.2.A closed-form solution was also derived for the calculation of geosynthetic tube resting on rigid foundation based on some approximations. The equations in these approximated equations express relationships between the geometry parameters and the factor of pumping pressure which make it possible to establish a series of basic charts for all the geometry parameters such as the contact width with ground, b, the width, B, height, H, perimeter, L, and area, A, of cross-section of a geosynthetic tube. With these design charts, the tensile force along the tube, T, and geometry parameters, b, L, B, A, can be calculated. The calculation can be implemented by using Microsoft Office Excel.
