ACTIVITY: USING THE HOSTS FILE TO INOCULATE YOUR MACHINE

Using the hosts File for Protection

System: These instructions are for Windows systems (any version).

On Mac and Linux systems, the hosts file is in the /etc directory, so you’ll need to edit /etc/hosts.

Time: This activity should take you 10 to 20 minutes to complete.

Goal

To update your hosts file with the content of someonewhocares.org to prevent your browser from going to a malicious domain or an ad site.

Instructions

Note: Hit Enter after each command.

Open Notepad as Administrator and open your hosts file as in the previous activity.In a browser, go to someonewhocares.org/hosts/.Scroll and read through the various categories of sites listed.Copy the text from this site and paste it into your hosts file.Save your hosts file.

This will prevent your browser from going to any of the malicious sites listed. You can return for updates periodically.

After you've finished, answer the Check Your Work questions.
