How is this MOOC structured?
How are we going to spend the six weeks of this course?
I’ll be basing this course on the architecture of the 4G network, the LTE network with its various entities:the UE, the eNodeB, S Gateway, P Gateway, MME, HSS.
In a certain sense, we have set the background, shown the elements and their interfaces in this first week.
During week 2, we’ll look at security procedures, and at the initial attachment of a UE to the network.
The exchanges we’re going to see will be principally between the terminal and the MME via the eNodeB, and between the MME and the HSS.
There are also a few exchanges between the S‑Gateway/P‑Gateway, but most exchanges concern the terminal/MME/HSS.
In week 2, we’ll see the mechanisms in place to stop just anyone accessing the network, to stop just anyone listening to what a user transmits or receives.
In week 3, we’ll concentrate on a critical point of the mobile system: the radio interface.
In this course, the objective is not to go into the details of the radio interface, but to present the essential elements to understand how exchanges happen between the UE and the eNodeB.
In week 4, we’ll look at how transmissions of data flows are organized with the concept of tunnels between P‑Gateway, and S‑Gateway, and eNodeB.
Week 4 will also be devoted to seeing how signaling exchanges are organized between the UE, the eNodeB, and the MME.
In week 5, we’ll look at how the sporadic nature of data flows is managed.
Week 4 will have enabled us to understand the concept of a tunnel, and we’ll see, in week 5, how tunnels are established and how we manage the sporadic nature of transmissions: the fact that, from time to time, my terminal is transmitting to the network because I use it and, during a long period, it is silent because it’s in my pocket.
In week 6, we’ll look at mobility:mobility when I’m not using my terminal but it’s turned on and, mobility when I’m making exchanges.
For example, I watch a video and at the same time I move, from the coverage of one base station to the coverage of another base station.
This is what we call the handover.
We’ll see, in week 6, both the location management mechanisms and the handover mechanisms.
This is an exciting program that will enable us to really understand how a 4G network works.
